Some hoaxes warn about hackers. Sometimes they even claim to be a direct threat from the hacker himself. If you received one of these messages, please send it to

- Naughty Robot
- This message claims that the "Naughty Robot" spider has captured your credit card numbers, phone number, address etc. In fact, it has only
found your email address.
Trojan Hoaxes
These are hoaxes concerning destructive programs (trojans). If you received one of these messages, please send it to

- AOL Privacy Invasion:
- A message warning about a privacy invasion at AOL. Not likely.
- Budweiser Frogs
- Watch out! The Budweiser Frogs screensaver contains a virus. Not impossible, but not true either.
- GHOST.EXE
- Another harmless program being falsely accused of being a trojan
Reward Hoaxes
These hoaxes promise a reward in exchange for forwarding them. If you received one of these messages, please send it to

- Unfortunately, Coca-Cola is unable to track e-mail so they can't send you your free coke.
- Forward this to See a Funny Clip or Hear a Cool Sound
- This latest hoax will show you something really funny if you send it to your friends.
- Let's all go to Disney World!
- The son Walt Disney never had promises you a free trip to Disney World.
- Bill Gates Email Tracking
- Just forward this message and Bill Gates will make you rich!
- Extra $$$ for the Summer
- National banks everywhere are giving away money! Sounds too good to be true and it is.
- Gerber Savings Bond
- A hoax claiming that you can receive a $500 savings bond for every child born between 1985 and 1997.
- Veterans' Divident
- A 1950's announcement about dividents on WWII life insurance has made it all the way to the Internet.
True Hoaxes
They have all the characteristics of a Hoax. They waste time, bandwidth and money. There's just one difference: they are based
on the truth. Most of these true messages are just as useless as the false ones.
- 90# Phone Scam
This message warns that people posing as AT&T technicians are trying to trick you into letting them make phonecalls on your expense.
This is only possible in certain specific situations.
- PKZIP300B Trojan
- This warning about an extremely rare trojan is exagerated and not worth forwarding.
- SHS Scrap File Trojan
- Scrap Object (.SHS) files can contain anything, including executable code. Clicking on them will automatically execute the contents which might be a Trojan. However,
the warning message tends to spread more confusion and panic than useful information.
- Internet access tax
- It's true! The FCC did put forward a proposal for an Internet tax. What the message neglects to mention is that the proposal was rejected in February 1997.
