Nothing helps a chainletter spread more quickly than
the promise of saving a dying child. After all, only
someone with a heart of stone would refuse to spend 30
secons forwarding an email if it meant saving a
child's life.
Unfortunately out humatity and compassion can
sometimes be abused.
This is what the "Rachel Arlington" message
attempts to do. It describes the plight of 10-month old
baby Rachel Arlington who has a brain tumor and needs an
operation to save her life.
According to the message, AOL and ZDNet have made a
generous/creul offer to pay 32 cents toward the costs of
the operation for each person who forwards the message
to 3 people.
The message is a hoax from start to finish. There is
no baby Rachel Arlington and AOL and ZDNet made no such
offer. Even if they had, it would be technically
impossible to find out who forwarded the message to whom.
